Nasi, Joseph
(c. 1524-79)
   Portuguese statesman, active in Turkey. He was born a marrano in Portugual under the name Joao Micas. He accom-panied his aunt Gracia Nasi when she went from Lisbon to Antwerp in 1537, but when in 1545 she fled to Italy, he remained behind to settle her affairs. In 1554 he joined her in Constantinople, where he embraced Judaism publicly and married her daughter, Reyna. He became an intimate of Selim, the heir to the Turkish throne. In 1561 he obtained from the sultan the lease of Tiberias and control of an adjacent area, which he developed as a Jewish centre. He was eventually created Duke of Naxos and the Cyclades.
